What are
Tachyon?- Tachyon are those hypothetical subatomic
particles whose speed are always greater than speed of the light. The word
hypothetical is used because these particles exists only in theories, physical
existence of these particles haven’t proved yet. Also, these particles are
called as the particles having its rest mass as imaginary (i.e. value of its
mass can not be represented in conventional way).
History of
Tachyons— The idea about the particles whose speed is greater than
light was first proposed by three great Indian scientists-E. C. G. Sudarshan,
O. M. P. Bilaniuk and V. K. Deshpande in the year 1962. And at that time, they
named this particle as meta particles. After that in the year 1967 Sc. Gerald
Feinberg proposed same theory in a research paper named “Possibility of faster
than light Particles”. In this paper he called the particles whose speed is
faster than light as Tachyon.
Concepts— According
to special theory of relativity the speed of the light of is the fastest speed
exist in the universe. It means there is nothing whose speed is faster than
light. This special theory of relative is deeply explained in many classes till
10+2. Now here a contrast arises that,
If the speed of light is the highest speed in the universe then what about
Tachyon. Hence here we get a conclusion that the theory of the special
relativity is the half truth told to us. So now we can say that in this
universe three kind of speed exists.

The particles whose speed is always
less than the speed of light i.e. these are the particles whose speed will
exceed the speed of light. Example- Thighs we see in our daily life.

The particles whose speed is always
equal to speed of light. Example- mass less particles like photon always travels
with the speed equal to speed of light.
· The particles whose speed is always greater than the speed of light. Example- Tachyon.
Some
Important Terminology—
1.
Bradyons— The things
or particles which always moves at speed less than the speed of light is called
Bradyons particle.
2.
Luxons-- The things or particles which
always moves at speed equal to the speed of light is called Luxon particles.
3.
Tachyons— The things
or particles which always moves at speed greater than light is called Tachyon
particles.
Myths— Some
believe that Tachyon violates or brake the rule of special theory of relativity. But
if we go to the deeper part of the this theory then we will come to know that,
If the particle speed is less than or equal to the speed of light and somehow
they succeed in increasing their speed to greater than the speed of the light
then they will break the law of Special theory of relativity. If the speed of
the particle is always (by birth) larger than speed of the light then they will
not violate any law of special theory of relativity. But it is also true that
no particles having speed less than speed of light can cross the speed light
barrier. Since tachyon do not violate the law of special relativity hence
theoretically existence of these particles is possible.
Properties
and Facts—
· Rest
mass of the tachyon will always be imaginary, its mass can not have
conventional value.
· The
length and life-time of the tachyon will also be always imaginary.
· Mass
of tachyon will exist only if its speed is greater than light. If somehow its
speed is reduced to the speed of light it will become mass less.
· The
speed of tachyon can never be less than the speed of light.
· The
most amazing and important fact and property believed about the tachyon
particle is if they will be really found then with the help of tachyonic wave
we can send the signal or message in our past.
· The
point above mentioned clearly states that if the existence of tachyon will be
true then TIME TRAVEL will also be easily possible.
Possibility
of existence of Tachyon— Since the mathematical
equations/expressions and supportiveness of physics theories and laws clarify
about the existence of the tachyon that they do exists. But also, some physics
theories, laws and no proof of tachyon’s existence clearly support the
statement that tachyon do not exist.
Also,
some scientist believe that existence of tachyon will lead to the time travel
and this will again lead to violations of many more theories. And perhaps time
travel may lead to some mishappens in the universe. So, for now we can say that
tachyon do not exist and let's wait for their existence in future.
